Staircases

Custom timber staircases

From survey to installation, every staircase is designed and manufactured in our Ludham workshop — straight flights, quarter-turns, open-string designs and curved stairs, built in hardwoods selected for the project.

Natural beauty

Survey, design, manufacture and fit — under one roof

Every staircase begins with a site survey. We measure floor-to-floor heights, headroom clearances and structural fixings, then produce working drawings showing strings, treads, risers, newels, balustrade and handrail detail. The design is approved before any timber is machined.

Manufacturing happens entirely in-house. Treads, risers and strings are machined from selected hardwoods — European oak, mahogany, Idigbo or softwood as specified — then assembled with traditional mortise-and-tenon joints. Newel posts, handrails, spindles and balusters are turned and shaped in the workshop before the full flight is dry-assembled, finished and delivered for installation by our own fitting teams.

Bespoke staircase design

We produce detailed working drawings for every staircase — specifying the string type (open or closed), tread and riser dimensions, newel post design, and balustrade arrangement. Straight flights, quarter-turn, half-turn and kite-winder configurations are designed to meet Building Regulations for rise, going and headroom.

Timber staircase installation

Our own fitting teams install every staircase we manufacture. Newels are fixed to the structure, strings are scribed to the floor and ceiling, and handrails are jointed and finished on site. We protect the surrounding property throughout and leave every flight ready for use.

Staircase refurbishment

Where a staircase is structurally sound but visually tired, we can replace individual components — new treads, risers, spindles, newel caps and handrails — without dismantling the full flight. Existing strings and structural members are retained where possible, making refurbishment significantly more cost-effective than a complete replacement.

Custom finishing touches

Finishing is specified to suit the project: clear lacquer, hand-wiped oil, paint-grade primer, or a traditional wax finish on hardwood. Ironmongery including stair rods, glass balustrade clamps and brushed stainless-steel handrail brackets are sourced and fitted as part of the complete package.

The detail

Built in the workshop, fitted by our own teams

A staircase is the most complex piece of joinery in most homes. Every flight we manufacture is built to the specific dimensions and design of the property — from the string profile to the handrail section, nothing is mass-produced.

  • Premium timbers

European and English oak, mahogany, Idigbo, ash and Scandinavian softwood — each species selected for its structural properties, grain character and suitability to the chosen finish. Hardwoods are used for treads, handrails and newel posts; softwood may be specified for paint-grade components where appropriate.

  • Straight to spiral

Straight flights, quarter-turn and half-turn landings, kite-winder configurations and curved strings are all machined and assembled in our Ludham workshop. Open-string designs with cut-and-waxed treads sit alongside traditional closed-string flights with housed risers — the design is driven by the property’s architecture and the client’s brief.

  • Handrails & balusters

Balustrades are specified to suit the staircase design — turned or square spindles, glass panels, or metal infills. Newel posts are shaped in section and height to complement the handrail, and all joints are machined for a precise, permanent fit.

  • Refurbishment, not replacement

We refurbish existing staircases by replacing individual worn components — treads, risers, spindles, newel caps and handrails — while retaining the sound structural strings. This preserves the character of period staircases and is significantly more economical than a full replacement.
